The Nature Conservancy - New Names in the News Client
642,401 Members/Donors
Early last fall, Names in the News welcomed The Nature Conservancy as a new brokerage and list management client. For almost fifty years The Nature Conservancy has been on the forefront of preserving bio-diversity through the protection of natural resources both domestically and internationally.
The donors to The Nature Conservancy are an educated and compassionate group of men and women from coast to coast who understand what it takes to keep our natural habitats thriving. The generosity of these donors translates into healthy donations for environmental causes of all types.
We are delighted to manage The Nature Conservancy's dynamic list of donors and recommend use of this file for environmental mailers and other fundraisers in search of responsive, dedicated donors.

1999 marked our 30th year of operation. I've been with Names in the News for 23 of those 30 years - long enough to experience much of our history and to feel excited about celebrating this important milestone.
I've been privileged to see the direct marketing industry grow and change. And I've witnessed our contribution to these advances, and to the nonprofit causes we've served. In 1969 direct mail fundraising for non-profits was a revolutionary idea. Dick Hammond was the leader of that revolution. As a passionate New York City list broker, Hammond recognized that the direct marketing needs of public interest groups and fundraisers were being neglected. He moved to San Francisco and launched Names in the News in an attempt to meet those needs. Some of his clients included.Common Cause, Sierra Club and the ACLU. We've stood alongside our women's rights clients through Roe v. Wade, helped numerous Democratic candidates make it into office, contributed towards saving rainforests and endangered species, and helped fund AIDS research. We were also there in the late sixties and the seventies to help some wonderful civil liberties organizations move a step closer to a world of equality and freedom for minorities and the oppressed, both in America and in other nations.
Dick Hammond passed away in 1989, and we miss his presence and the spirit he brought to the industry and to our clients' causes. I think he'd be glad to see that today we continue to serve many of the same clients he first introduced to direct mail back in '69. And we have another 400 or so nonprofit clients who now rely upon our expertise and systems each time they mail.
These thirty years have also brought with them some amazing advances in the technology used in our industry. Those of you who've been in direct mail for more than a couple of years may remember when we recorded exchange balances on 3 x 5 cards. And, not to date myself, but I can recall tearing apart 4-part carbon copied order forms and popping orders into the mail. Fax technology was years from existence and the phone was much more critical both to relaying information and developing relationships. In those days taking a state or sex select off a list was considered advanced and highly targeted list marketing.
The last three decades have certainly brought numerous changes to both the direct marketing industry and the nonprofit community. On this, our thirtieth anniversary, we celebrate these changes. And we celebrate you, our clients. We hope to work with you and be a part of your cause for the next 30 years. See you in 2029.
